Democracy in the Post-Soviet Territory: 20 Years Later

Brief Information:

Comenius Society is for the first time organizing a conference reflecting upon the historical as well as recent process of democratization in European and Asian countries, which were part of the former Soviet Union. The two day conference of two working languages (English and Russian) will be divided into five specific discussion topics relevant to the contemporary struggles and challenges Euro-Asian democratic societies continue to face.

We are proud to announce that the conference will be with the attendance of:

  • Mrs. Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, Former President of Latvia
  • Mr. Janez Lenarčič, Director of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, OSCE Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe

We are looking forward to your registration!

Mission of the Conference:

Comenius Society considers twenty years since the fall of the Iron Curtain to be a crucial moment in history, a milestone, when the process of democratization must be re-evaluated. Upon the break-up of the Soviet Union, Western-style liberal democracy became a political model adopted by all 15 republics of the former U.S.S.R and the outcomes of this historical development are very mixed. The process of democratization has taken different forms in every country of Euro-Asia and the high number of illiberal democracies calls for critical self-reflection in all countries wanting to progress towards a free and transparent government.

In response, we are arranging a conference focusing on the transition phase from a totalitarian regime to democracy and also on the imperfections of present democratic societies of Euro-Asia. The conference is to provide a discussion platform for representatives of the states of the former Soviet Union to come together and exchange their insights about successful as well as unsuccessful strategies of the past. “Democracy in the Post-Soviet Territory 20 Years Later” should embody a communication point for critical reflection as well as for visionary propositions for the future.
